Raylands Country Park Rewilding Project Brings Nature Back to Life

Categories

Raylands Country Park is leading the way in rewilding, transforming its landscape into a thriving, nature-rich environment where wildlife can flourish.

Once managed primarily for productivity, the land at Raylands had become simplified over time, with limited biodiversity. Today, through a dedicated rewilding project, the park is restoring natural balance and creating a sustainable future for both wildlife and visitors.

Rather than large-scale disruption, the Raylands rewilding approach focuses on small, meaningful changes. Pesticides have been eliminated and replaced with natural alternatives, while traditional pest control has been phased out in favour of natural ecosystem balance. Birds of prey such as kestrels and owls are now encouraged to return, helping to control pests naturally.

Sustainability is at the heart of the project. Environmentally friendly treatment systems have been introduced, and all owners at Raylands Country Park are committed to using eco-friendly cleaning products. Petrol-powered equipment has also been replaced with battery-operated alternatives, reducing emissions and noise pollution across the park.

Land management practices have evolved too. Grass is no longer cut during key flowering periods, allowing wildflowers to bloom and support pollinators such as bees and butterflies. This simple change has had a significant impact, helping biodiversity to recover and thrive.

The results of the rewilding project are already visible. Pollinators have returned, followed by a growing number of bird species. Raylands is now home to kestrels, barn owls, and tawny owls, alongside a wide variety of insects and plant life. Bird boxes, bat boxes, and swift boxes have been installed to further support wildlife habitats.

Collaboration has been key to success. Raylands has worked closely with organisations including Horsham Wilder and Rangers Lodge, as well as its community of owners and visitors. Through social media and regular updates, the park has made rewilding an inclusive and shared journey.

Recycling and waste reduction are also a major focus, with owners actively supporting sustainability efforts across the park—something rarely achieved at this scale in the tourism sector.

Today, Raylands Country Park is more than just a holiday destination. It is a living example of how rewilding can restore ecosystems, increase biodiversity, and create a richer, more immersive natural experience.

This is an ongoing journey, with more positive changes still to come. At Raylands, rewilding isn’t a final goal—it’s a long-term commitment to working with nature, not against it.
